Joan of Arc - Progression
This progression traces the development of Joan of Arc from an initial drawing into a completed painting. Beginning with carefully constructed lines, the image gradually emerges through layers of colour, modelling and detail. The armour becomes increasingly sculptural, while Joan’s face develops into a quieter and more contemplative presence.
A process of discovery
The photographs reveal the painting as a process of discovery rather than simply filling in a predetermined design. Forms are reconsidered, covered and rebuilt as the work develops.
Allowing Joan’s presence to emerge
Beginning with a carefully planned composition, transparent layers of colour establish the atmosphere before successive glazes build the forms of the horse, armour, and landscape. As each layer is added, the painting moves from line to light, allowing Joan’s presence to emerge with increasing clarity and strength.

Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc (c. 1412–1431) was a young French peasant who believed she was called by God to help liberate France during the Hundred Years’ War. Guided by her faith, she led French forces to a series of remarkable victories, most notably the lifting of the Siege of Orléans, inspiring hope in a nation on the brink of defeat. Captured at the age of nineteen, she was tried for heresy and burned at the stake. Years later, her conviction was overturned, and in 1920 she was canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church.
This painting honours Joan not only as a historical figure, but as a symbol of courage, conviction, and unwavering faith. Despite overwhelming opposition, she remained steadfast in what she believed God had called her to do. Her story continues to inspire people across cultures as an example of the strength that can arise from faith, humility, and perseverance.
