Arch Angel Michael - Progression
This series of photographs documents the development of my painting Archangel Michael, from the initial pencil drawing through successive layers of acrylic paint to the finished work. Rather than completing one area at a time, I build the painting across the whole surface, gradually refining the composition, colour relationships and light. Recording these stages reveals the many decisions that are hidden beneath the finished image and offers a glimpse into the slow process of transforming a simple line drawing into a finished painting.
Arch Angel Michael
Archangel Michael is a principal figure in Judaism and Christianity. His name means "Who is like God?" He is known as a powerful protector, a leader of heavenly armies, and a warrior who fights against evil.
A contemporary interpretation of the Archangel Michael, this work reimagines the traditional image of heaven’s defender through flowing forms, layered colour and expressive symbolism. Michael stands triumphant over evil, holding the sword of truth and the scales of divine justice, while sweeping ribbons and feathered wings create a sense of movement, strength and spiritual energy.
Rather than focusing on realism, the painting explores the timeless struggle between light and darkness, reminding us that courage, justice and faith can overcome fear. Drawing on both medieval Christian iconography and modern expressionist influences, this artwork invites quiet contemplation of hope, protection and the enduring victory of good over evil.
Printed on premium canvas, this piece brings a distinctive and contemplative presence to any home, office or sacred space.
